In 1992 Officer Joe A. Maciel established a scholarship program to sponsor highschool seniors on their journey to higher education; the scholarship started with $200. Years later, Amigos en Azul officially named the scholarship Joe A Maciel Scholarship to honor Joe A Maciel for his hard work and dedication to the organization.
Over the years the program has rewarded over $200,000 to graduating high school seniors wishing to pursue a higher education. During 2024, we were able to raise $23000 during the golf tournament along with charitable donations; Amigos en Azul was able to sponsor 12 students with $1500 each.
The application to the Scholarship Program opens up every year on Jan 20th and closes on March 31st.
We wish all applicants the best of luck in applying for our scholarship, as well as other endeavors.
The Awards and recognition program was created in 2025 to highlight Hispanic/ Latino officers by recognizing and celebrating their contributions, achievements, and leadership in the Austin Police Department . This initiative aims to promote diversity and inclusion within the police force, foster community engagement, and inspire future generations of Latinos in Law enforcement. By showcasing the accomplishments of these officers, the program seeks to enhance visibility, challenge stereotypes, and encourage a greater understanding of the unique challenges and perspectives faced by our communities. Ultimately, this award program serves to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities we serve, promoting trust and collaboration.
